Philip Goodwin

Phil began to play the trombone at Bury Schools’ Music Centre and then with the world famous Besses o’th Barn Band. At the age of 14 he gained a place at Chetham’s School of Music where he studied with Peter Leary and Neville Roberts. From there he went to the Royal Northern College of Music continuing his studies with John Iveson, trombone with the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the Swedish virtuoso Christian Lindberg. Whilst at college he became a member of the European Community Youth Orchestra and won the Leggett Award for British Trombone players.

Philip has followed a freelance career that has seen him play with most of the countries finest orchestras and ensembles, and in many of the major concert halls throughout the world. As a tutor at Chetham’s since 2002 he has conducted many different ensembles and together with opportunities afforded to him by the Northern Chamber Orchestra he is becoming sought after as a conductor and coach. He is dedicated to youth brass development and this year became chairman of the Stockport Schools’ Brass Band.
