Alison Stephens – Mandolin Journey

An exploration into music for the mandolin from, and inspired by, many countries around the world. Ali also explains some of the mandolin’s many relatives including the balalaika and bouzouki and brings examples of these instruments (a Baglama from Greece and a Bandurria from Spain). In addition, we will explore the historical journey the instrument has made from its early popularity in the first part of the 18th century through to the present day. We will hear music from, or influenced by, Greece, Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy and France.

Composers will include Bach, Calace, Abel, Kioulaphides and Stephens. Ali will also be playing her own composition “Pelagia’s March” which she was commissioned to write by the BBC as the theme tune for a 2007 Radio 4 dramatisation of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
